Who Ever Loved That Loved Not at First Sight?

By Christopher Marlowe (1564–1593)

It lies not in our power to love or hate,

For will in us is overruled by fate.

When two are stripped, long ere the course begin,

We wish that one should love, the other win;

And one especially do we affect

Of two gold ingots, like in each respect:

The reason no man knows; let it suffice

What we behold is censured by our eyes.

Where both deliberate, the love is slight:

Who ever loved, that loved not at first sight?

The poem is about love at first sight. It is said that it is not within our power to love or hate. Love just happens and you can’t help who you are in love with. The idea, an irresistible force that makes people fall in love, is really mysterious and unexplainable. The last two lines indicate that love is weak, but if it is love at first sight, the love of unreason, then it will be strong. It is true that it does not lie in our power to love someone, but I do not agree that love at first sight is the only way people fall in love. Personally, I’ve never experienced love at first sight. This is the reason why I decided to put myself in the author’s position in which everything is destined that I fall in love with the person I see for the first time.

“Love at First Sight Wasn’t For Me, Until It Was”

The heart knows where your fate lies.

They say love is blind,

But the eyes don’t lie.

Is it too soon to say it,

When our eyes meet, my heart runs after you.

If only I could rewind,

To feel that moment one more time.

You don’t have a clue,

What it’s like to be, me looking at you.

I think I fell in love with you, at first sight.
